A city force, a state system, and the file underneath.

The brief

The present appointment is Commissioner of Police, Vadodara City — the officer responsible for law and order, crime, traffic and public safety across a commissionerate covering one of Gujarat's largest urban populations. Alongside it he holds a state-level brief as chairman of the VISWAS task force, the programme that determines what Gujarat's police can see and record.

The two roles pull in useful directions. One is immediate: a procession to route, a complaint to register, a junction that keeps producing accidents. The other is structural: a camera standard to specify, a command centre to commission, an integration that has to work across thirty-four districts. The pages below set out both.

Commissioner of Police, Vadodara City

Vadodara is central Gujarat's principal city and a working industrial and service centre on the Mumbai–Delhi economic corridor. It is also a city of festivals and processions, a university city, and a marathon city. A commissionerate here has to be good at scheduled crowds and unscheduled ones alike.

Charge was taken on 16 April 2024 — a day before Ram Navmi, and inside the model code of conduct for the general election. Both of those landed in the first fortnight. The priorities set out publicly on arrival were the conventional crime portfolio held steady while cyber and financial crime capability was built up behind it, supported by special equipment and intelligence deployment for peace and order.

State-wide brief

Chairman, VISWAS Task Force

VISWAS — Video Integration and State Wide Advanced Security — is Gujarat's programme for a single, connected surveillance and traffic-management picture. As chairman of its task force he oversees the implementation of the camera network, the body-worn camera fleet and the drone systems, and the district command centres that make the feeds usable.

The programme has been carried into national forums. At the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances conference he presented VISWAS in the session on best practices of the Government of Gujarat.

Central Bureau of Investigation, on deputation

Approximately seven years were served on central deputation to the CBI. Central investigation is a different discipline from state policing: longer horizons, tighter evidentiary standards, and cases that are read by people who were not in the room.

The habit it leaves — that the record must be able to speak for itself — is visible in the later technology work, where the whole point of a camera network is an account of an event that does not depend on memory.

Headquarters

Gandhinagar

Additional Director General of Police

Senior appointments at the Gujarat State Police Headquarters, including the administration portfolio. Headquarters work is the least visible part of a police career and among the most consequential: postings, procurement, training, standards and the machinery that decides what a force is equipped to do.

In January 2026 he was elevated to the Director General grade while continuing to command the Vadodara City commissionerate.

The public half of the job

A commissioner's diary is not only operational. Civic ceremonies, institutional anniversaries, school and college programmes and community meetings are where a police force is seen without an incident attached to it.

It is also how road-safety and drug-awareness campaigns reach the people they are written for. The presence is the message.

Areas of responsibility

What a commissionerate actually carries.

Expand any heading. These are the standing responsibilities of the office, described as they apply in Vadodara.

Law and order

Vadodara's calendar is full of occasions that gather people: Ram Navmi and the procession season, Navratri, the marathon, examinations, results and the movements of visiting dignitaries. Each has a route, a crowd estimate, a deployment and a contingency. The commissionerate plans these as scheduled work rather than as emergencies.

On taking charge, the stated approach was to maintain peace and order through the deployment of special equipment and intelligence — anticipation rather than reaction.

Crime, cyber and financial

Conventional crime remains the volume of the work. What has changed is the arrival of offences that leave no physical scene: fraud routed through payment systems, impersonation, investment scams, and the theft of credentials at scale.

He named this as a priority publicly on arrival in Vadodara, framing the force's capacity as needing to span traditional, cyber and financial crime together rather than treating the newer categories as a specialist annexe.

Traffic and road safety

Traffic is where most citizens actually meet the police. The VISWAS network was built with traffic management as an explicit objective, including automatic number-plate recognition and intelligent traffic management systems at district command centres.

Alongside enforcement sits education: Vadodara's road-safety programmes are run with civic partners, and the Commissioner's office participates in them directly.

Election and event security

The Vadodara appointment began inside the model code of conduct for the 2024 Lok Sabha election. Election policing is its own specialism — a fixed timetable, a legal framework administered by the Election Commission, and a requirement that the force be visibly neutral.

Technology and surveillance infrastructure

As chairman of the VISWAS task force, the brief extends past Vadodara to the whole state: the camera network and its phases, the district command centres, the body-worn camera fleet, drone-based systems, and the integration layer that makes them one picture rather than several.

The programme is described in detail on the Impact page.

Community engagement

Drug awareness, road safety, women's safety outreach and school and college programmes are run as police work with a public face. The clearest single example is the ‘Resolve for Drug Free India’ pledge taken by more than a hundred thousand people at the Vadodara Marathon.

Areas of expertise

Where three decades have concentrated.

Drawn from the postings actually held, not from a generic competency list.

A

Case-led investigation

Central deputation casework and the documentation standards that come with it.

B

Metropolitan command

Running a city commissionerate across law and order, crime and traffic simultaneously.

C

Police technology programmes

Specification, phased rollout and governance of state-scale surveillance infrastructure.

D

Police administration

Headquarters work: standards, capability building and the machinery behind a force.

Delegations and representations. Citizens, associations and institutions received at the Commissioner's office.

The open door

A steady stream of people who need something from the police.

Trade bodies, residents' associations, schools, sports organisations, welfare groups and individual citizens all arrive at a commissioner's office with representations. It is unglamorous, continuous work, and it is where a force learns what a city is actually worried about.

Much of what appears later as a campaign or a deployment starts as a conversation across this desk.
